The Process
Event, space and constraints
The site was an outdoor road intersection: a 7m x 2m LED display, direct sunlight, no controlled environment. We built the tracking system around compact infrared lidars on 3D-printed magnetic mounts, chosen for reliability over hours of unsupervised public use.
We added a timed canvas fade after observing during testing that users hesitated before painting over each other's work.
The Outcome
The wall across the night
The installation ran the full event without intervention, handling ten simultaneous users from a single machine. 1,500+ interactions logged across three nights.
The timed fade became the most-photographed interaction. Users would watch their work disappear, then return to paint again.
